Obituary
Alan Dwight Mullen, 69, of Ft. Meyers, FL, died after a long illness Monday, July 15, 2024. He was born on February 26, 1955, in Indianapolis, IN, to John J. Mullen, Jr., and Evalyne Morrison Mullen. The youngest of five children, Alan was a born athlete, competing in basketball and becoming a National Champion with the Baxter YMCA team.
Alan graduated from Indiana Central College (today the University of Indianapolis) with a B.S. in Education. He continued the family teaching legacy, serving as a teacher and coach in the Decatur Central and Speedway Schools. He coached women’s teams in several sports as well as National Championship teams in AAU leagues.
Alan continued to play basketball after graduating, and his teams competed at the national level on several occasions. He had the same success participating in adult softball tournaments. He eventually took up golf, retiring to Ft. Meyers where he played daily and perfected his three handicap.
Alan loved to regale his family and friends with stories from his teaching and coaching days and could easily fill any time gap allowed. He remained friends with many of his former students and athletes.
