Obituary

James Lamar Massenburg, age 78 years old, was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024. He proudly served as a Sergeant in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Jimmy dedicated 35 years to the Steel Plant as the Roller Forman in the plate mill and worked as a pass operator at the Anniston Chemical Disposal Facility for 15 years. He had been happily retired for 11 years, spending his days surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
Jimmy was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Glencoe an alumnus of the University of Alabama and was an avid fan of Alabama football. He loved to read, work out, watch golf, and share captivating stories from the good old days. His story telling brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
Jimmy was born July 12, 1945. He lived in Gadsden during his childhood and later resided in Glencoe, Alabama. He is preceded in death by his parents Wythe Lamar and Ruby Massenburg and his sister Freddie Boozer. Jimmy cherished the memories he created with his family and always held them close to his heart.
Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Phyllis Massenburg, who was his rock and constant companion. His son, Kenneth Massenburg, and his daughter in law Jana, brought immense pride and happiness to his life. Kenneth, a dedicated and loving son, followed in his father’s footsteps, embodying the same work ethic and integrity that Jimmy instilled in him. He has built a successful career and a beautiful family, making his father exceedingly proud. His grandchildren Adley, Aida, Aaron, and Ahna Kay Massenburg, were the pride and joy of his life. He also leaves behind his dear niece, Cheryl Boozer, who he loved dearly.
There will be a funeral service at Crestwood Chapel at 2 pm Sunday July 7,2024, presided by Reverend Barry Benefield, to honor his memory and celebrate the remarkable life he lived.
Pallbearers will be Wil and Skylar Deerman, Barry Moore, Andrew Wright, Scott Tillison and Juston Osborne.
